"Healthcare reform's kumbaya moment didn't last long. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association will roll out a multi-million-dollar advertising campaign this week that aims to make "people aware of the importance of preserving your free-market healthcare system," as a senior executive told the Washington Times."

Hah, I don't think the merits of the so-called free market don't sell as well as they used to. The nation has just finished experiencing a giant years-long ad war, and we've had just about enough of strangers telling us about how we should feel about political issues like health care reform.

Um, the author of the article is an American national from Chicago, Merrill Goozner, who works for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. He's hardly a "stranger" to US affairs, and his article signals his worry that the health reforms voted for in the election mght not happen.
As for the rest of the developed world - we all, without exception have socialised health care systems, because it keeps the costs down. The UK for instance manages to cover the entire population's heath, spending just 7.5% of GDP - the USA spends 16% of GDP, and still leaves about 40 million without cover.
Part of the reason the UK keeps costs down is that the government bargains with pharma companies when buying drugs - they negotiate a discount for buying in bulk. American states don't negotiate drug prices at all, which is odd (all normal capitalist businesses negotiate discounts when bulk-buying) - but the USA has set up a sort of welfare for pharma companies where they get whatever they demand, and damn standard practice!
The new American government is going to have to work hard to break such destructive practices.

One suspects that the political will is there right now. The American public is, to put it none too politely, pissed, and that means that somebody is probably going to pay. The political will is also present in Congress, as you have single party dominance for the first time on the left in a while (or at least what passes for left here). That high pitched keening sound you are hearing? That's Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, O'Reily the Oggravation, and all the other stooges of Corporate America gearing up their pretty hate machine, the better to serve the corporations while they're on the outs. Isn't it fun being bought and paid for?
All that being said, I'm still not holding my breath for major reforms. I'll settle for some pressure release (besides, as a school teacher, I actually have decent health benefits, which somewhat compensates for pitiful salary renumerance....)
