I've been living without a credit card for two years now, from choice. I buy everything by debt card or cash, and if I haven't enough money to buy something, I simply wait till I've got paid or do without. And thus my debts are falling very fast.

Guardian phone scandal is about hundreds of reporters bugging celebrities and politicians. The police reponded that it had looked into the case of the Royal reporter Clive Goodman, and concluded that there was nothing more to be said (Goodman was jailed).
OK it was substandard circa 1995 - the Conservative government had starved it of cash in the hopes that people would get so tired of waiting for operations they would switch to private healthcare (they were hoping to create a US style system here).
